We've been granted an opportunity to visit the massive collection of trains up in Portola, CA at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum. This museum's focus is centered around experiencing a more hands on environment, inviting guests to get up close to all the pieces they have on the property. For us this includes exploring all the old train cars as well as taking the opportunity to stay in the sleeper cars and cabooses. They also have a unique experience in letting guests drive a locomotive, and how could we pass that up?!? Does this mean we wear overalls and a striped hat? I certainly won't be the one to discourage you if you want to!
We're scheduled to stay there from Saturday July 28th to Monday July 30th, so clear your calendars now.
We'll be leaving the Bay Area around 9am on Saturday (July 28th) morning. Current plans have us making a couple stops, along with a lunch break, along the route. That Saturday afternoon we have an appointment for driving a locomotive followed by an evening under the stars and amongst the trains.
Sunday we'll be going on a hike in the mountains and lakes, followed by a final appreciation of the trains as Monday morning we'll head back into the Bay.
This will be an excellent opportunity to do the Spoor Tracker badge, Solar Historian, Radio Operator and Forager amongst others, but we're also offering the Train Conductor badge on this trip.
